Introduction to Hypnosis

Hypnosis is often portrayed as a type of “voodoo magic,” but it is really just a tool that can be used to help a person clear their mind of distractions and focus their attention on specific thoughts and feelings - usually directed by a skilled hypnotist that knows which thoughts and feelings to focus on in order to get the desired result. Although being hypnotized can be a very surreal and eye opening experience, it's not the hypnosis per say that makes it that way. It's the things that hypnosis allows you to experience that can be mind blowing and perspective shifting. The hypnosis itself doesn't feel like much at all - it is actually something that everyone has experienced in their day-to-day lives.

You probably have never thought about it this way before, but spiders are actually excellent hypnotists.  If you’re like most people, finding a spider on your shoulder can be a scary thing.  As soon as you see that spider, your heart rate rises, your blood pressure spikes, and you can feel the fear.  At this point, your attention is focused.  You don’t remember what you ate for lunch because it’s just not important - you don’t have time for distractions.  When your friend tells you it’s a harmless garden spider, it doesn’t change a thing - it’s like you’re not really listening to him because all of your attention is on that dang spider.

If you’re particularly phobic of spiders, you might have even noticed yourself responding a bit in the same way just from reading about the spider.  By using our imagination, we can create situations that our subconscious treats as if they were real. This is how we are able to learn from the mistakes and advice of others.  By using our imagination - that is, directing our attention to situations that we are not currently in – we can program ourselves to respond in those situations should they come up.

Of course, we don’t always learn from the mistakes of others and we don’t always take their advice.  That’s because we sometimes fail to truly engage our attention on their situation.  If we don’t imagine it clearly enough so that we can see and feel the importance, then we don’t end up learning anything.  If you think back about all of the powerful advice that really impacted you, I bet you’ll realize that you listened to it with rapt attention.

Hypnosis simply provides a means to achieve the level of attention necessary to make lasting changes.
